Experienced travelers will tell you there are spots around the world that are so amazing, you have to see them for yourself. These places have landmarks or experiences that are unique and can’t be replicated anywhere else. 

The hype around these locales is well-deserved. All it takes is a sense of adventure and curiosity to discover what you’ve been missing. Once you read this list of famous destinations, you’ll want to add them to your travel list. 

1. Kruger National Park, South Africa

Seeing animals at the zoo is a cool experience, but there’s nothing like watching them in their natural habitat. Kruger National Park offers several safaris that include sights of birds, buffalos, elephants, leopards, lions, and rhinos. 

Some available safaris are self-directed, allowing you to drive your car along the spots where the animals live and congregate. Several take you on guided tours through the park, and other safaris are designed for the entire family. 

2. The Grand Canyon, USA

For an awe-inspiring experience, you can’t go wrong with visiting the Grand Canyon in Arizona. It’s more than just a massive rock formation. There are several Indigenous Native American tribes currently living in the Grand Canyon Village, which have deep historical ties to the landmark. 

Gorgeous overlooks are located around the Grand Canyon, but there are numerous ways to enjoy the national park. You can walk or hike the Southern Rim, bike on Hermit Road, or take a scenic drive along the North Rim. 

3. Antarctica

Antarctica is a lightly traveled, enthralling destination that may not be the first place you think of vacationing. The continent has stunningly beautiful, pristine scenery, and visiting there is a most memorable occasion. 

Several companies offer cruises to Antarctica, some with stops in Argentina and Southern Argentina. When you arrive in the southernmost part of the world, you’ll be treated to sightings of emperor penguins and smiling leopard seals.

Peru’s most famous landmark, Machu Picchu, contains the ruins of a citadel from the legendary Incan Empire. The ancient fortress is located in the upper Amazon basin and the eastern side of the Andes mountain range.

Machu Picchu isn’t a single place; it's made up of close to 200 structures and stone terraces. This UNESCO World Heritage site is an architectural wonder that stands close to an impressive 8,000 feet/2834 meters above sea level.

The northern African nation has a definitive place in history going back thousands of years. From the Sphinx to the Great Pyramid of Giza to the Luxor Temple, Egypt’s landmarks are unlike anything else on Earth.

Egypt has its share of deserts and oases, but it’s also home to the Nile River, and is hugged by the Red and Mediterranean Seas. You can swim in the Blue Lagoon in Dahab or dive to see the incredible Eel Gardens.

What makes Dubai stand out from other places around the globe is the sheer number of experiences the city offers. You’ll be wonderstruck by the futuristic architecture, like the famous Burj Khalifa Tower, which measures 2,716 feet in height, and the Cayan Tower with its 90-degree rotation. 

Depending on when you’re there, you might catch the Festival of Lights fireworks show at night. Tourists who are power shoppers can enjoy no taxes on their purchases. You can also dine at several Michelin-starred restaurants. 

7. Iceland

Iceland is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights for eight months a year. From September through April, the lights are the most visible from different parts of this country, and they are magnificent to behold. 

If you stay in one of the more heavily populated cities, you’ll have fewer opportunities to view the Northern Lights. It’s recommended that you book a stay at a hotel in a more rural area to have a better chance of seeing them.

China’s famous wall measures more than 3,000 miles/4,828km in length and dates back more than 2,000 years. The Great Wall of China spans through a number of the country’s provinces, many of which offer terrific views. 

The Great Wall was built to defend China from its ancient enemies, but it’s hospitable to modern-day hikers. Some sections of the wall are more difficult to hike than others, so there’s something for all hikers, from novices to those seeking more challenging routes.

The Galapagos Islands are regulated by specific environmental laws protecting the region’s delicate ecosystems, but there are ways to tour the region that are environmentally responsible. These eco-tours have become popular in recent years.

Guests of the archipelago can opt to stay in hotels, go on cruises between the islands, and take day trips. The majority of the islands are protected, but tourists can visit specific sections with approved tour guides.

Visiting Italy is more than just a tour of famous places like the Roman Colosseum, the Vatican, the Trevi Fountain, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It’s also the perfect country to go on a foodie tour, with its diverse cuisine

Northern Italian dishes are more rice and meat-based. Foods like risotto, prosciutto, and salami are highly popular in that region. Southern Italian plates are more pasta-based and seafood-heavy, thanks to its proximity to water. Then there’s the pizza, too!

It’s not an exaggeration to say that New York City is the ultimate tourist destination. More than just a single city, it is a mix of distinct neighborhoods with their own attributes and attractions. The only problem is where to start.

Times Square, in Midtown Manhattan, is not only recognizable worldwide, it’s the heart of the city. The Chelsea Market in the Meatpacking District, has food, art, and shopping attractions, while Washington Square Park is a lovely green space in Greenwich Village. 

12. The Greek Isles

The islands of Greece are divided into separate regions providing visitors with an idyllic experience. Evia is the second-largest island in the country and is known for its thermal springs, and the Cyclades island group has an architecture that’s unique to the region. 

In the North Aegean region, the island of Psara has waters that are perfect for underwater fishing, swimming, and diving. The Dodecanese region includes the island of Kastellorizo, with its remote location ideal for visitors wanting a more secluded experience.
