Most people look forward to retirement. Even those who know they'll be on a limited income look forward to the day when they no longer need to work. However, sometimes what looks like a great thing in the beginning can start to get old after a while.
Sometimes, tight finances weigh on you, and you want a little more financial freedom. In those instances, finding a low-key, stress-free job is usually the main goal for seniors and in retirement.
If you're in the market for a low-stress, undemanding job to boost your disposable income and help fill your schedule with something useful to do, look no further. We've curated a list of some of the coolest, money-making, low-pressure jobs you can enjoy in your retirement years.
1. Dog Walker
One of the best ways to stay active and make a little money is to offer your services as a dog walker. From creating a solid contract to picking up Fido and Daisy, walking dogs is a fantastic way to help busy people, their animals, and your own well-being.
Walking dogs for your neighbors may give you more than you intended when you set out. So, be sure to carry your phone, some pepper spray, and possibly a big stick as you walk. Sometimes, neighboring dogs will get curious, especially if there's no fence to keep them in place. Be safe above all else.
2. Senior Companion
Sitting with an older senior who's in need of some company is such a great way to make some extra cash. If you like to knit or crochet, you can often do those activities while you're keeping an older person company.
Sometimes, you'll just need to sit with them, as they may be in the throes of dementia. Other times, they may be active and like a good card game or some decent conversation. Whatever situation you find yourself in, you play a valuable role in helping family and friends keep their loved ones safe and comfortable as they age.
3. Craft Sales
When I was little, my grandmother taught me to crochet. It's something I've held onto as I've aged. One of my favorite things my grandmother used to make was kitchen towels that could hang on the handle of an oven.
Practical and cute, these are just one option for people who like to craft to sell their items at flea markets and roadside stands. You could easily partner with a vegetable seller and make some good money with an activity you already enjoy doing.
4. Librarian
The library was my absolute favorite place to hang out growing up. I loved reading because, as Reading Rainbow used to say, “You can go anywhere in a book.”
Thanks to the selfless effort of hundreds of librarians around the country, children and adults alike can enjoy countless stories, do useful research, and learn innumerable new concepts and facts. If you enjoy reading, are knowledgeable about computers, and can run a printer, you'll make a fantastic librarian.
5. Receptionist
If you have a background in customer service, enjoy answering phones, can accurately take and deliver a message, and can work with a digital schedule, working as a receptionist may be just the job for you.
Working as a receptionist can provide not only valuable income but may also help boost your health benefits with dental, vision, and overall health insurance options. If you're looking for a boost in your monthly income, seek out some receptionist jobs and see what sticks.
6. Photographer
I once worked for an older man who made his living taking photographs of lilies. In his home, huge prints of the pictures he took that paid his mortgage, took care of his health insurance, and afforded him the lovely life he enjoyed hung on the walls.
Photography may be just a hobby for you, but it's one that can help you earn some extra “fun” money. Outside of a gallery, you can easily upload and sell your prints online, sometimes for very decent money.
7. Airbnb Host
My mother-in-law has a full four-bedroom home with an attached bedroom, bathroom, and separate kitchen. She occupies the bedroom and uses her own bathroom and kitchen.
She uses the full-length trailer, which has four bedrooms, a large bathroom, and a nice kitchen, as an Airbnb and plays host to the guests who come through her home. With a little extra work outside what she already does, she earns very good money.
8. Consultant
When you've lived long enough to reach retirement, your knowledge base is likely impressive. You can use all that knowledge to consult with businesses, solopreneurs, and entrepreneurs on topics that matter to them.
Consulting is especially great if you have a background in a specific area like banking, investments, carpentry, electrical or construction work, etc. These specializations are a bonus that can really solidify your work as a consultant and earn you a great side income.
9. Gardener
My husband is never happier than when his hands are full of rich, dark soil. He loves planting season and creating beautiful flower beds. Even if you don't want to be someone's personal gardener, you can still make good money as a gardener.
You can specialize in flower beds or expand your services to full-on yard transformations. If you want something small, you can even be the person who transports the plants from one location to another and earns a decent disposable income.
10. Travel Agent
If you love to travel, one fun job is moonlighting as a travel agent. You can relax during the day, take a nap, and wake up refreshed and ready to help people make their vacation and travel dreams become reality.
One funny example of this job is in the movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding. You'll need some people skills for this job, as it's a lot of phone conversations. You'll also need to have some computer experience, as most agencies are going to have their schedules online. However, if you can check all the boxes, it's a great second career.
11. Blogger
If you had asked me thirty years ago whether I'd be a writer, I would have laughed. I was going to be a doctor and travel the world. I now make my living as a writer and last left Florida 17 years ago.
Just because you may not have made your initial savings by writing doesn't mean you can't earn some nice “fun” money doing so. Writing is fun and can even be cathartic. You can write in a journal and turn those into a memoir. You can write online and form a blog. You can even write for someone else and get paid handsomely for your effort.
12. Course Creator
Like consulting, you can turn all that life knowledge you've gained into a course or courses to help you earn some quick cash. You can make a course on investing, teaching children about money, how to properly dose medication for babies, and how to prepare for an emergency. Literally, you can turn anything you can teach into a course.
Use all that knowledge to create online education classes that teach people what you already know. If you get enough people interested, you can make serious money on these!
13. Housekeeper
Busy people pay handsomely to have someone clean their homes; I can completely understand why. When people attend sports activities for their grandchildren, do volunteer work, and enjoy social activities with friends, housework is the last thing they want to fuss over.
That means good news for you. Working as a housekeeper now, especially if you can do so for a wealthy family or two, is usually great money. It can be a lot of work, as homes in this demographic don't come small. However, when you put in a great effort, the money they pay you will be worth it.
14. Tutor
Teaching children and inspiring a love of learning can be one of the most rewarding things you ever do. You can work individually with one student on one topic or use a platform to teach many students in a particular subject.
Some platforms will even allow you to create courses on your topic that parents can purchase for their children. These different avenues for tutoring today's youth all offer great opportunities to impact children and make good money at the same time.
15. Interpreter or Translator
Being bilingual or even a polyglot is a beneficial tool in today's world. Speaking a second, third, or fourth language can have serious advantages when it comes to making extra money.
If you can speak fluently and read and write in a different language than your native tongue, you can earn money as both an interpreter and a translator, doubling your money for virtually the same effort. Not bad for a day's work.
