JetBlue Carry-On Size: How Strict is JetBlue?

JetBlue Carry-on size

When traveling, carrying carry-on baggage makes it so much easier. First, you do not have to check in the bag, and secondly, traveling lighter costs less to travel. If you are flying JetBlue, you must think about whether you want to check a bag or use a carry-on.

JetBlue is one of the most popular airlines in the U.S., offering many low-cost fares to international and domestic destinations. It would be much easier to carry on our luggage than check it in.

You may want to opt for the carry-on to save money and time. The question does come up, what is the JetBlue carry-on size policy? How strict is the JetBlue carry-on size?

Can I Bring a Carry-On For a JetBlue Flight?

JetBlue allows a person to have carry-on luggage and a personal item. The carry-on luggage will be placed in the overhead bin, and the personal item must fit under your seat.

As JetBlue does have many other low-cost options, such as Blue Basic Fare, the carry-on allowance is not allowed for those customers flying on a Blue Basic Fare. The Blue Basic Fare will be discussed later on.

How Strict is JetBlue About The Carry-On Size?

JetBlue carry-on size must be able to fit in the overhead compartment bin and must not exceed 22″ L (55.88 cm) x 14″ W (35.56 cm) x 9″ H (22.86 cm). The size includes handles and wheels that are a part of the carry-on baggage.

With the carry-on, JetBlue is very strict with its size. If the plane is an incredibly full flight, they will be even more stringent. It is best to make sure your carry-on fits in the sizer bin. JetBlue will have you check it in if the suitcase is deemed oversized, costing you money in baggage fees.

Other Items That Can Be Carried On:

Here are a few items that can be carried onto the plane without counting as your carry-on bag.

  • Infant Child Seat
  • Diaper Bag
  • Assistive Devices
  • Duty-Free Items

Be mindful of how much you are taking on the plane. There are many other people on the flight, and if there is not enough room, then JetBlue will check your bag and give you a $25 JetBlue Travel Bank credit.

How Strict is JetBlue About the Carry-On Weight?

JetBlue is like many other major airlines such as Delta, American Airlines, and United in their carry-on size weight limit. There is no weight limit for the carry-on baggage.

If you want to save some room on your baggage, you may want to wear some of your heavier clothing while you walk through the gate.

The next thing you could do is put any extra items into your item that can fit underneath your seat.

What is a Personal Item With JetBlue?

Bringing a personal item on board can help you save some space and make sure your luggage fits JetBlue's carry-on size restrictions.

Personal items are items that can fit underneath the seat in front of you with dimensions of 17″ x 13″ x 8″ (43.2 cm) x (33 cm) x (20.32 cm).

Jet Blue Classifies a Personal Item as:

  • Small Backpack
  • Laptop bag
  • Briefcase
  • Purse

What About the Blue Basic Fare?

JetBlue has a budget option when you are flying with them. The fare is the Blue Basic Fare. If you buy a Blue Basic Fare ticket, you will not be allowed to have a carry-on bag with you. You are only allowed a personal item.

There are some exceptions to the rule. Any carry-on bag you bring will be checked baggage and can cost you $65 per bag. Those people that fall under these categories will be exceptions to the rule.

  • Mosaic members (who get a carry-on bag and early boarding with all fares)
  • Travelers that are combining a Blue Basic fare with an Even More® Space seat (on all legs, if connecting)
  • Travelers to/from London (including connecting flights)
  • Active U.S. military
  • Unaccompanied minors

How To Avoid Baggage Fees on JetBlue

An unnecessary fee will derail some of the best experiences you may have when traveling. It is best to avoid some of these mishaps. If you can keep your baggage to the JetBlue carry-on size standards, there should be no problems.

If you want to avoid most baggage fees, there are a couple of ways that you can use JetBlue.

Elite Status Mosaic Member

First of all, it is to achieve elite status with JetBlue. If you are a frequent flyer with JetBlue, you should try to achieve elite status.

That would mean becoming a Mosaic member. You will get a free checked bag and a free carry-on with all fare types (including the Blue Basic Fare) with the elite status. That is savings I like.

Grab a JetBlue Credit Card

The following way is to have one of the JetBlue credit cards. It can either be a personal or business credit card. They will give you perks like a free checked bag.

Final Thoughts:

When traveling, try to avoid checked luggage that costs some fees; it will be prudent to carry on your luggage. The airline will make sure that the carry-on will fit the necessary restrictions according to JetBlue's carry-on baggage allowance policy.

Make it easier by taking an additional personal item like a backpack that you can pack other belongings into it. Then you can have a smaller carry-on that will fit your needs.

As we travel, we want to save money, and having the right size carry-on and knowing the rules can go a long way in protecting our money.
