Have you ever traveled outside the States and encountered an establishment that transported you back to the States? For me, KFC in Iceland made me double-check my location. Someone asks an American online forum for “Things that feel American outside of America (USA). What are some things outside the states and territories that feel quintessentially American?”

1. Poutine

The Canadian combination of french fries, cheese curds, and gravy boggles Americans' minds that it isn't from the States. A few responders say you can make an Americanized version of Poutine but can't quite perfect the Canadian dish.

2. Burgers

One traveler writes whenever he consumes a burger in another country, he feels at home. Another person shared that Ljubljana, Slovenia has the best bacon cheeseburgers.

3. SUVs

When thinking of cars in other countries, what comes to mind? Small automobiles cruising down the opposite side of the road? Open Jeeps flying through sandy, unpaved roads?

Or a similar road situation to that of the U.S.? This jet setter admits they expected the cars in Europe to be tiny, two-door station wagons. Seeing how similar the car trade is to America's surprised them.

4. Country Music

“In Warnemunde, Germany, I heard a band at a park singing country music. When I got close, they were singing in German. German scruffy guys, with jeans, boots, leather vests, and cowboy hats singing German country,” a globetrotter remembers.

5. Fast Food Restaurants

As I mentioned above, witnessing American fast food chains in other countries is a bit stirring initially. However, each country's menu differs from America's; for example, at Five Guys in London, you can order alcoholic milkshakes with your burger and fries.

6. Baseball Caps

Are you a Yankees or Red Sox fan? An explorer noted when they visited France, most of the French residents donned Yankee ball caps and a few Red Sox hats. He confesses to ditching his hat in a last-minute effort to pack a compact suitcase.

7. Korean Baseball

Here's another baseball-related tidbit. While in Korea, this tourist bought a ticket to a baseball game and marveled at the similarities between the Korean and American versions of America's favorite pastime. Like American games, the Korean audience munched on fried chicken, threw the bones onto the field, and indulged in alcoholic beverages.

8. Canada

A large number of responses claim Canada is the same as the U.S. “Most of Ontario, Canada feels pretty much like the American Midwest,” someone writes. “Similarly, Alberta feels like a combination of Texas and Colorado, while British Columbia feels like Washington and Oregon,” another user agrees.

9. Bar Lebowski

If you miss America while walking through downtown Reykjavik, pop into the Americana-themed bar, Bar Lebowski. Dartboards hang on the walls, surrounded by posters of Uncle Sam and motivational paintings. A bowling alley room, porch, and 50s diner are among the other thematic rooms in this restaurant.

10. Gas Stations

“Petrol station convenience stores are essentially the exact same experience in Europe vs. the U.S. The specific brands might differ, but the variety and types of merchandise largely overlap,” a nomad elucidates.
