Millions of people grind away at a nine-to-five pace daily and envy the lucky few with seemingly the cushiest, most straightforward jobs on the planet. How did these people get such great jobs? Today, we find out together. Recently, men and women met in an online discussion to reveal how to score those coveted cushy jobs we all wish we had!
1. Get Lucky
With my things in life, sometimes it's about being in the right place at the right time. If you want the job of your dreams that requires minimal work for an excellent salary, you might have to get lucky. Countless men and women confess that they didn't do anything special to lock down their cushy jobs; they just happened to luck into it! Whether responding to an email promptly or being “seen” by an influential executive, you'd be surprised how you can wiggle your way into a great job!
2. Relentless Work Toward It
The cream will rise to the top, and many admit they didn't rely on a traditional education to get the job of their dreams. Instead, their occupation resulted from relentlessly working toward their goals. “I don't have a college degree, but I started my career as a test chamber technician,” reveals one man. “Now I'm developing and deploying the supply chain planning strategy for a $5 billion company because I busted my ass for every opportunity I could. I educate the educated about how to plan a supply chain.”
3. The Jobs Are Not as Cushy As You Think
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and many jobs we think are cushy are the opposite. We don't know what it's like working so-called “cushy” jobs until we're actually performing the duties ourselves. “My father-in-law has one of those cushy jobs,” one man reports. “He works from home as a CPA, barely does anything, and makes almost 200k a year. But for a few months in the spring, he is the busiest, hardest-working person on the planet. I don't know how he does it.”
4. Be Born Into It
Unfortunately, nepotism in the workplace still exists in 2023, although most companies explicitly forbid it. Let's be honest: Do you think Donald Trump's kids earned their way to executive status through hard work and diligent habits? In many cases, being born into a successful company is all you need to effortlessly slide into an all-time cushy occupation.
5. Get Promoted Into It
Many men and women confess that it's important to target companies with a track record of promoting worthy employees. “To find this kind of role, you want to focus on huge companies and plan to work up the corporate ladder,” advises one woman. “Focus on places where it's easy to get lost in the shuffle. Then, start observing different roles to target. Most people won't admit they do anything, so you'll just have to keep an eye out. You'll find them, usually with an important-sounding title.” It's not the worst plan I've ever heard!
6. Know the Right People
Knowing the right people can often give you the upper hand in landing the job you've always wanted. Many workers admit they wouldn't be where they are without having a friend lending a helping hand. Now is a great time to ask close friends who are successful if there's room in their company for you; remember, the worst thing they can say is no!
7. Possess a Desirable Skillset
Let's face it: Obtaining a cushy job is far easier when you have the desirable skills to set yourself apart in an increasingly competitive corporate world. “Anyone that makes a higher salary with relatively low responsibilities is someone that has a skill that other people don't have or aren't capable of doing well,” explains one man. “Software engineering is an example of this type of expertise.”
8. Start From the Bottom
Companies like In-N-Out Burger have employee-friendly policies that encourage growth from within. In fact, they have never brought in an outside hire in the company's illustrious history! Instead, they have always been promoted from within. The only way to become a cushy regional manner is to start from the bottom as a dishwasher. It's a surprisingly simple way to climb the corporate ladder the old-fashioned way!
9. Networking is Key
Not everyone is lucky enough to know the right people or be related to the right executive. Therefore, it's imperative to network as much as humanly possible. Always be on the lookout to meet people who may give you a leg up on a better career. “Network like your life depends on it,” reveals one woman. “That advice has gotten me in a better position to succeed than any other tips I've ever encountered.”
10. Never Stop Searching
If you're still searching for the cushy job you've always dreamed of, don't give up hope. Good news is always right around the corner and often comes when you least expect it. Many successful men and women credit their “never-say-die” attitude for finally landing the job they always wanted. Don't let yourself be discouraged; keep sending out those resumes, keep interviewing, and keep putting yourself out there!
10 Strategic “Weaknesses” to Share With Confidence in a Job Interview
I once attended a job interview where the boss threw me a curveball for the first question. He asked me, “Why shouldn't I hire you?” Admittedly, I was stumped for a moment before losing any chance I had with the legendarily bad “Because I will make you look bad with my heroic work ethic.” Spoiler alert: I didn't get called back. A recent online discussion shares much better advice for those job candidates expecting a similar scenario.
