10 Times Flight Attendants Made Passengers Say ‘Are You Kidding Me?’

Have you ever boarded a flight and sat with sweat rolling down your face, nervous about the flight attendant's experience? One time, I hopped on a flight with no air conditioning, and we sat on the tarmac until an apprehensive flight attendant took the mic and asked us to deplane carefully. Another time, a flight attendant caressed my dad's back as he violently vomited in his seat. Here are more instances resembling those experiences.

1. You're in My Seat

We've all had those instances where a stranger informs us we're in their seat. They relentlessly point at their boarding pass and the diagram above the seats to prove you're in their space. When they don't match, they get irritated with you. One person stated this happened to her, and when the flight attendant noticed, she moved the girl away from the irrational man to an open row, as the man remained in a cramped row.

2. Spilled Their Drink

A traveler shares an embarrassing anecdote on his first trip to Thailand. He sang the whole time, switched between open seats, and imbibed alcohol for the entire duration of the flight. He remembers that one flight attendant offered him a drink, and he obliged before she dumped it on his lap. He admits he deserved it.

3. Upgrade for Free

A Vietnam veteran noticed an advertisement to upgrade his seat from coach to business class for $39. He approached the representative desk—wearing a Vietnam vet cap— and inquired about the deal. He accepted, and after a few moments, the representative informed him he needn't pay.

4. Will You Switch Seats?

“Someone wanted the emergency row exit on a flight from Frankfurt to NYC. The flight attendant asked the guy next to me if he would mind swapping seats with someone, and before she could finish, he said, ‘Oh, no, I paid for this seat.' She looked at me and asked the same question. I replied, ‘Sure, no problem.' She took me to First Class, and the only inconvenience was that the co-pilot sleeping next to my suite asked me to move my reading light,” a seasoned jetsetter replies.

5. Whatever You Do, Don't Get Sick

Experiencing motion sickness void of a sick bag is torture. That happened to this globetrotter. She asked the flight attendant to run to the bathroom. However, the food carts occupied the aisle, so she had to wait for them to leave. She searched for a sick bag in her seat pocket but could not find one. Eventually, the flight attendant came over and asked why she didn't use a sick bag and tossed one at her with a scoff.

6. That Doesn't Look Right

A passenger spotted a strange cloud emanating from the engine, so she alerted one of the flight attendants. The worker took this behavior as a threat and yelled at the passenger to return to their seat. Upset, the passenger reported to the purser and explained the situation. The flight attendant went through retraining, and the passenger received free travel points.

7. First Aid Is Too Much Work

A respondent recalls a gruesome trip. “My mom flew across the country to visit me, and when I picked her up at the airport, she had a four-inch gash on her wrist and a bloody napkin. She said that she had fallen as she was walking to the lavatory, and there was sudden turbulence. When she asked the FA for a bandage, she was told that they'd rather not open the First Aid kit since they would then have to file an accident report, which they would prefer to avoid, so they urged her to use a napkin instead. My mom went along with their plan, but I definitely said, ‘You gotta be kidding me.'”

8. That Is Not My Job

“I remember flying on American years ago, and this little old lady of about 85 came down the aisle pulling her bag. And when she got to her seat, she had to lift it into the overhead locker, which, obviously, she was physically unable to do. So she asked a flight attendant to assist her. The guy just berated her: ‘Ma'am, you are not supposed to bring luggage aboard if you are incapable of lifting it into an overhead locker. It is not part of our job description. We are not supposed to help you lift bags,'” a disappointed individual gasps.

9. You Need To Check Your Blanket

I returned home from a music festival in the middle of Deleware's woods with a sleeping bag and a backpack. One flight attendant waved me through, understanding that I would hold my sleeping bag or use it as a blanket on the flight. Another one advised me that a sleeping bag counts as a carry-on, and I needed to fork over $45 to bring it on the plane. I sighed and unraveled the blue bag into a blanket to save money.

10. Have a Wrap

A flight attendant mentions that a passenger expressed frustration when the crew didn't offer him food. The head flight attendant approached his seat so the man could describe the situation. “I said just give me a few minutes. I got the wrap, put it on a plate, put the bag of chips that come with it around the wrap, and brought it to him, and he was very happy. I walked past her, going back to my cabin, and said, ‘Was that so hard?' At the end of the flight, he came up to me and thanked me again,” he says.
