The pandemic brought out the worst of us in many ways — especially when reselling scarce items. Countless people recall dealing with toilet paper shortages and evil resellers selling them at 100 times their retail value. Taking advantage of other people to make a quick buck is shameful.
3. Payday Loans
Preying on low-income people who are down on their luck is reprehensible, and many people regard payday loan companies as the most immoral businesses around. “Kicking people when they're down with massive interest rates when they are already low on money and are desperate enough to get such a loan is predatory behavior,” explains one man.
4. Multi-Level Marketing Schemes
People are near-unanimous with their thoughts on multi-level marketing schemes: Pyramid schemes like MLMs are scummy to the highest degree.
Companies like Mary Kay, Herbalife, and others prey on unsuspecting people to sell their products under the guise of making limitless money. Unfortunately, the only people making money are at the top of the pyramid!
5. Bill Collectors
It's astounding that anyone gets into the profession of bill collecting. The prospect of harassing people for your job is reserved for the least empathetic people in the world.
“I can't believe there's a profession that's just spam calling the individuals and family members and making threatening calls and texts,” confesses one woman. “It's wild that this is legal. I truly believe they are the scum of the Earth. You can get another job.”
6. Being a Landlord
With rent costs spiraling out of control in recent years, it seems like the best way to make a quick buck is to own property — and rent it out to the highest bidder. Many citizens blame landlords for the out-of-control housing market that drives up prices when many areas are experiencing a housing shortage.
In these cases, renters have no recourse — they have to pay ever-increasing monthly rent, or they're left to find another place to live. It's not fair.
7. Paparazzi
Blame Americans' never-ending thirst for celebrity culture if you want, but that still doesn't make what the paparazzi do right in any way, shape, or form. Harassing celebrities during private moments of their lives and reselling photos and videos to the highest bidder is one of the all-time scummiest ways to make a living.
8. Being a Politician
It takes a particular type of person to get into politics, and many believe the job is fit for the worst of the worst. “Basically, politicians do nearly nothing,” explains one woman. “Depending on your type, you get lengthy vacations (from doing nothing) while having great pay tied with inflation, and apparently, it's impossible not to try to throw yourself into corruption.”
9. Fitness Influencers
Sadly, many social media influencers use their desirable body types to push phony “personalized workout plans” to their followers. These fitness programs are nothing more than hastily written gym routines found on countless other websites.

Like the aforementioned bill collectors, corporations buying personal debts and taking it upon themselves to bully people is another level of scumminess. “Buying other people's debt and then hounding them and suing them as an intimidation tactic is awful human behavior,” laments one man.
“Yes, some shady law firm bought your debt. Yes, that shady law firm is suing. No, they don't have your signature on a contract or any documents saying you actually owe them money. You're just a name and number on a spreadsheet.”
