10 Things That Have Simultaneously Gotten Worse and More Expensive

Saad Muzaffar

The modern era brings its share of conveniences and advancement. However, as many things become readily available, their quality has decreased. Members of an online community share these ten things that, as time goes by, have become substandard and hard on the wallet.

1. Cable TV

Cable television was once a sensation, but as more and more commercials infiltrate the world of television, numerous users give up on it. While the amount of channels and content is increasing, a huge downgrade in quality doesn’t justify the insane billing. One person comments, “I remember when MTV was music, and the history channel didn’t normalize conspiracy theories.”

2. New Homes

It appears that mass manufacturing has taken over the housing industry as well. What one describes as “cookie cutter houses” are built via cheap contractor services. The quality is abhorrent as it only looks nice on the outside. Baseboards turn out to be particle boards. Doors are made of plastic and warp with temperature changes. And who knows, if you cut into it, the house might be made of cake.

3. Photo Booths

There was a time when photo booths would sell you four different, real photographs for a dollar. “Now you pay $7 for four identical bad laser prints.” As if this wasn’t bad enough, one member shares how they booked a $1500 photo booth for a wedding which just meant an iPad on a stick with a ring light and printer available for four hours.

4. College Education

Tuition costs keep rising, and the quality of education seems to go down as one user shares that their fall semester has no in-person sessions. As hard as it is to wipe out the insane student loans, it’s possible that traditional college becomes too expensive except for the elite, and the majority will continue to be in debt. “When I hear college used to be paid with a summer job, my eyes get watery,” says one college student.

5. Dunkin’ Donuts

Do you remember when the donuts at Dunkin’ were bigger and cheaper? Every day, the huge selection of flavors truly made the brand earn its name. However, as many chains expand and branch out into other domains beyond their specialty, the quality goes down.

6. Cadbury Creme Egg

Many reminisce about the delectable taste of Cadbury Creme Egg. While all other products may still have viable alternatives, this one is irreplaceable. “There’s nothing else like it on Earth, so once Cadbury ruined the recipe, it was a treat lost forever,” states one sad commenter. Members say they will pay double or more to have it back the old way.

7. Scented Candles

While there are greater varieties and scents now than ever, the experience has decreased considerably. Someone mentions how the Yankee Candle used to be the candle that was considered premium, and while it’s never been cheap, it was worth the money. Now, the prices are sky-high, and they don’t even smell like they used to.

8. Retail Clothing

The advent of fast fashion has given rise to disposable clothing, which is unsustainable and would last you only a couple of washes. Hence, many users recommend thrifting since it’s not harming the environment or your wallet. Plus, finding something special in a bunch of mysterious items is exciting.

9. Slim and Sleek Tech

Even technology appears to give in to beauty standards as slim devices become the norm. One avid Apple user says they’d take the one-inch thickness and more ports than using a hub for everything. Many believe that such a taste for compactness has hampered the functionality of devices.

10. Housing and Renting Costs

One person remembers their first one-bedroom apartment cost only $450 a month in a suburb. They had parking, and there were no weird extra fees. However, many renters express that buying a new house looks cheaper due to the ridiculous costs of renting. Plus, there are pet fees and garage parking as extra costs! At least in your own home, you can have as many animals as you wish.
